Superior Seed Spreading

Plants use several different methods to spread their seeds. Seeds can be dispersed, or carried to new places, by wind, water, animals or even exploding out of seed pods. But is one method better than the others?

Research the four different methods of seed dispersal. Identify what is required for each to happen.

Then think about the area you live in.

Put the four methods of spreading seeds in order according to how effective you think each would be where you live. Explain why you ranked each method the way you did.

Disaster Task Force

Earth can be a dangerous place.  Virtually all places on our beautiful planet have some threat from natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes or wildfires.

You are part of a local government task force assigned to protect your community from the most common threat to your area.

Your job is to:

• determine which type of natural disaster is the biggest threat to your community

• design a plan for members of your community to follow to protect their lives and homes

• include things that can be done before and during a disaster in your plan

Gravity Plan: Visit to Another Planet

Did you know that the gravity on other planets pulls with more or less force than the gravity on Earth? A planet's gravity depends on its mass.

Pick a planet you want to visit. Research its mass and gravity compared to Earth. Use your research to plan your visit:

• Is the force of gravity stronger or weaker on your chosen planet? How will that affect your visit?

• When you visit, what will it be like to walk on that planet? Will you need special equipment to get around? Describe and/or draw how you will travel from place to place while you're there.

• Image you enjoy your visit so much that you decide to stay. How will that planet's gravity affect the way you build your house?

Sand: An Autobiography

Imagine you're a grain of sand on a sunny beach.

Tell your life story:

• Where did you start? How did you get where you are today?

• Describe and/or draw the different stages of your life. You might write a short autobiography or create a comic strip.

• Think about how weathering & erosion have affected you.  How have your size and shape changed over time? What forces or events have shaped you?
