WHY PARTICIPATE IN READERS’ CLUBHOUSE
Readers’ Clubhouse engages children in reading, thinking and talking about science. Learning to analyze and discuss different types of texts are important language skills that promote both reading comprehension and exploration of a variety of science concepts. Encouraging children to participate in Readers’ Clubhouse empowers children to investigate a broad range of fascinating books and science topics.
HOW TO USE READERS’ CLUBHOUSE
Readers’ Clubhouse is an easy & engaging addition to any science curriculum or enrichment. Here are some ideas for incorporating Readers’ Clubhouse:
• Participate in one or both of the featured Readers’ Clubhouse each month. Challenge your child to return to the same Readers’ Clubhouse throughout the month to continue the discussion.
• Match a Readers’ Clubhouse to each unit of your existing science curriculum or enrichment. Have your child complete the Readers’ Clubhouse during the unit and connect the book to what they are learning.
• Let your child pick one or two Readers’ Clubhouses to complete each month. It's ok if your child wants to repeat the same Readers’ Clubhouse multiple times. It's great actually! As long as their thoughts develop and mature with each new response, repetition can build deeper critical thinking skills.
• Use Readers’ Clubhouse as an enrichment activity after completing a science assignment, after school or during the summer.
WHEN TO START IN READERS’ CLUBHOUSE
It's never too early to start reading and talking about science. Readers’ Clubhouse is designed to be appropriate for all elementary age children. All children can read the books with an adult or older sibling, or independently. They can discuss the questions aloud and type their answers or have an older helper type. Children may also read and answer the discussion questions on their own. All children can make drawings or take photos to include in their comments and respond to the comments of others.
